5 Rules for Storing Coffee Beans
The secret to having a perfect cup of coffee lays in the quality of beans your use. Consider buying freshly roasted beans. This makes it necessary for you to know how to differentiate between fresh and old coffee beans. Then, you will need to store them properly to make sure they do not lose their freshness.

Once beans are roasted, they start to expel the aroma within. They also expel oil which gives them a glossy look. The amount of oil trapped in coffee beans will depend on how long they have been roasted.

Freshly roasted beans are usually heat sealed, with a valve to allow the emission of carbon dioxide gas. So, make sure that your coffee has the right appearance and packaging before you buy it.

After coffee beans have been roasted, you can get the best flavor out of them within the first 10 days. As you strive to get a regular supply of fresh roasted beans, sometimes you may fail to consume them within this period and may need to store them a little longer.

5 rules for storing coffee beans to make your cup simply perfect

#1: Avoid Storing Coffee Beans in Sunlight

When exposed to direct sunlight, coffee beans go stale and lose their aroma. This robs them the ability to produce the perfect drink you would love to have. To fix this problem, you will need an opaque container that inhibits sunlight from reaching the coffee beans. A ceramic container would be the perfect choice. However, if you can’t get it, use a dark colored glass canister for storing your coffee beans.

#2:  Never refrigerate your coffee beans

The fridge preserves most of food stuffs used in the house. Unfortunately, this is does not work for coffee beans. Instead of staying fresh, the coffee will absorb various aromas of things stored in the fridge. Have in mind that coffee is a good deodorizing agent. The flavor of the coffee gets completely distorted and thus the original aroma is lost.

#3:  Keep your coffee away of steam and moisture

Moisture is an enemy to coffee flavor. If you make a mistake of exposing your beans to moisture, it will go stale before you know it. Some of the places you want to avoid storing your coffee include the cooking and dishwashing areas. Places near a cooker that is frequented by steam and high temperatures are not a good choice to keep your beans. Also, the sink and its environs are prone to dampness. Be prudent and find a cool, dry place to store you precious coffee beans.

#4: Store your coffee beans in the original packaging

When you get your coffee beans from your retailer, it is advisable to store them in their original packets. Do not open the packets unless you are brewing the coffee. The moment you open the packets, you expose the beans to air and moisture. In this case, they lose their flavor faster. Put the packets in your storing jar to make sure the freshness of the coffee is maintained. It is also wise to buy the right quantity to avoid the stress that comes with storing a lot of coffee.

#5: Use the freezer as your last option

If you have enjoyed your coffee and it is clear that it will go beyond 10th day, prepare to store it in your freezer. Remember the ideal case is to consume your coffee within the first week of roasting. Beyond this period, the freezer will come in handy to help you retain the flavor a little longer. You will need to repackage you beans very well so that they do not get wet. Feel free to use bags that can be sealed or air-tight containers.
As you strive to enjoy a daily dose of a perfect cup of coffee, remember that brewing fresh beans is the key to realizing your dream. Shop coffee beans in manageable portions that you will consume while they are still fresh. Also, make sure you replenish your stock from credible suppliers only.

  1. These are great tips! I used to work as a barista, and we were very careful to keep out coffee beans fresh. At home, I use a french press to brew my coffee, and we fresh grind our beans for every cup. Which helps with overall quality too.
