Texas is a fantastic state with a great culture all of its own. Whether you yourself are from Texas and want to return there for a traditional Texan style wedding (complete with Texas food), or you live in the lone star state and are having your wedding locally, then you’ll find it is an amazing place to get married. Of course, you can have any style of wedding you like in Texas, especially in major cities like Dallas and Houston, and there are some wonderful places to check out like the award winning wedding venue in Houston, Chateau Polonez (plan your Houston wedding here). However, it can really make your day memorable if you incorporate at least some traditionally Texan elements into your day – allowing you to bring some of that famous Texas hospitality to your guests and make a real celebration.

Chateau-Polonez

There are some interesting Texas wedding traditions you can include in your day, but possibly the easiest way to add local charm to your wedding is in your catering. Everybody loves Texan and Tex-Mex cuisine, and while it may not be the first type of food you think of for a fancy wedding banquet, when done well, you can ensure a delicious menu your guests will love! Here are some ideas:

Texas Food:  BBQ

If you’re not expecting your wedding to be too heavy on vegetarian or vegan guests, then you can go all out with a meaty, tantalizing barbecue with all the trimmings. Of course, you can make this a little fancier by grilling up really good quality meats, the best Texas has to offer! Think of beautiful steaks sizzling on a lavish barbecue outdoors, and the finest sausages with homemade BBQ sauce. The beauty of a BBQ wedding feast is there are no menus to fuss over, so you get the convenience of a buffet, but people still get some delicious hot, fresh food they are going to love.

Texas Food: Tex-Mex

Adding some Mexican flair to your menu can make for a tasty and interesting choice that really well reflects the cuisine of Texas. This can easily be served buffet style or from a menu, and you can include favorites like fajitas, burritos, chili and refried beans. This is a type of food that is designed to be enjoyed family style, and will give the people at your wedding reception that celebratory fiesta feel as they eat!

Texan Rehearsal Dinner

If you like the idea of the BBQ or the Tex-Mex reception, but it doesn’t quite fit with what you wanted for your wedding (perhaps you had some elaborate French cuisine in mind), you can always have your Texan meal as your rehearsal dinner instead. Alternatively, you can go for BBQ for your rehearsal and Tex-Mex at the wedding, or vice versa. This can be a nice way to add even more Texan food to your event!

Choosing delicious, traditional food for your Texas wedding can be a great way to make it enjoyable and memorable for your guests, so why not start planning a Texan menu!

  1. Wishing I could celebrate my wedding Texas, thanks for sharing

    1. Glad you enjoyed it–we wish you the best!

  2. I am a Texan born and raised now living in Maryland and I still had me a Texas wedding up here. From my outdoor wedding complete with denim dress, to cowboy boots, to BBQ and mac n’ cheese at my wedding… and a bonfire afterwards.. it was perfect!

  3. I love these ideas! I’m planning a summer wedding and fruits will be showing up all over. I am completely obsessed with the idea of having a twisted picnic theme food menu. I am going for burgers with upscale toppings. I also want to do a great recipe I have for veggie burgers. I haven’t settled on the other main dishes, but do you have some other ideas for sides that fit in this theme? Mac-n-cheese is a definite, but what else might you suggest?

    Thanks!
