3 Dehydrator Recipes: Spiced Pears
Simple & Delicious Dehydrated Pear Recipes
Pears are hardy enough for cold storage; it is part of their charm. To preserve the full flavor and texture, though, it is really best to make a delightful snack–practically a candy–out of fresh pears! I share our three favorite dehydrated pear recipes with you to try at home. Simple and delicious!
The beauty of the Excalibur is that because it heats front-to-back, you can mix & match trays: you can dehydrate many different items simultaneously without worrying about flavors mixing (there is a limit–I wouldn’t put a tray of garlic in with my spiced pears). You can do all three of these recipes in the same 9 tray dehydrator if you so choose and you will still thoroughly enjoy the variation of each. The recipes below will give you approximately 2-3 trays each. I do not find it is an exact science because some of us douse the spices onto each pear slice more thickly than others. Either way, this is enough to get you started and you can play and tweak the recipes from there. Any suggestions? Add them to the comments for everyone to try!
Here’s the prep-work (the same for any seasoning or for none at all):
1) Peel & Core Your Pears. Even pears from the co-op might have fruit wax (we learned firsthand).
Don’t forget to scrub your pears; we prefer this great handheld scrubby brush.
We have the older version of this fruit corer; the new one has a cool suction-bulb to make the job even easier.
2) Slice pears with a knife or food slicer (the thing pays for itself with 3 uses & aids in dehydrating because the slices are so even).
3) Drop the pear slices into a large bowl of water with approximately 1-2 Tbs citric acid in it. This prevents the quick work of oxidization and keeps the color nice.
4) Drain and dab slices dry on a clean towel. Then roll them in the spice mix and place on a dehydrator tray.
Cardamom Spiced Pears
1/2 cup organic white sugar
1 tsp cardamom
1/8 tsp allspice
Pecan-Ginger Crusted Pears
1 cup pecans, ground (in a coffee/spice grinder)
1 tsp ginger
Cinnamon Spiced Pears
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbs cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp allspice
I sometimes hear people say that although they love dehydrating, tray-cleaning keeps them from it. It’s simple–if you know this trick! Listen up, this is worth the cost of admission.
Put about 1/4 cup citric acid under hot running water in your bathtub. Let the trays soak there for a few hours. Then use fresh running water and a scrub brush and they really just wipe clean (no elbow grease required). If a tray screen still gives you a fit, just apply a dab of citric acid directly to the spot and brush it clean. Whaalaah!
And if you do not already use citric acid in the kitchen, I promise it will transform your cleaning experience! Those nasty iron stains in my toilet came right off, the gunk around the kitchen faucet came right off, the dried-on bread dough on the countertop…came right off. Not to mention, it’s great for dehydrating, cooking, and food preservation! I firmly believe a prepared pantry will stockpile this stuff.
Be sure to dehydrate a tray with no seasoning at all, too–they are a great last minute addition to muffins, coffee cake, pancakes…get creative!
