How to Make Homemade Powdered Sugar

How to make powdered sugar

Powdered sugar makes nearly everything better.

Especially when you’re attempting to sneak something healthy past them.  Sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top, and all of a sudden, everyone thinks they’re getting by with dessert-for-breakfast.

I have mentioned before that we are a corn-free family (due to allergies), and until very recently, there weren’t any corn-free powdered sugar products on the market because about 3% of powdered sugar is cornstarch to prevent clumping (a shelf-life thing).

I’ll teach you how to make powdered sugar so that you can eliminate one more thing from that shopping list and a few more unnecessary ingredients that companies add to increase shelf-life.

When made at home, it has only 1 ingredient!

How to Make Powdered Sugar:

40 seconds and a cup of sugar.

There, I just gave you the recipe.

Do you have a coffee grinder just for non-coffee use?  I picked one up at a pharmacy for $10 over 8 years ago and it’s going strong.  I use it weekly for flax seed in my bread, for pulsing dehydrated vegetables to make powders, for breaking up peppercorns, and the list continues.  I’ve gotten so much use out of the thing, it’s paying me money with every use.

  1. Pull out your electric coffee grinder.
  2. Dump in 1 cup of organic, fair trade sugar (buy in bulk–so much cheaper!)
  3. Pulse for approximately 40 seconds.

Makes approximately 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar.
