“Squashllesauce”: Applesauce (and a fruit leather recipe) with a Twist

“Squashllesauce”

A Harvest Time Applesauce and Fruit Leather Recipe

Squashllesauce

We all have our favorite apple recipes this time of year; I like to combine my favorite apple recipe with another Autumn favorite, squash, to create a warm and filling side dish that my children request.

Basic Recipe

6 medium apples

1 acorn squash

1 tsp allspice

1 tsp nutmeg

1-1 ½ Tbs cinnamon to taste  (or use sticks in the herb infuser)

3-4 whole cloves

Lightly steam squash to make peeling it simpler.

Chopped Squash

Roughly chop apples and squash and place them into a pot of water (about 3/4 covered).

Put an herb infuser with cloves (and cinnamon sticks) into the boiling pot.  Cover and cook on medium-low  for 1 hour.  Add spices, and mash.

To make into a fruit (and veggie) leather:

Spread it just as it is onto paraflexx sheets and set the Excalibur Dehydrator to 135 degrees.  Times vary based upon humidity and climate.  Remove them when they are firm but pliable.
